Retooling an Athlete Introduction

My name is Bob Cook. I am a physical therapist in my own private practice at Performance Physiotherapy in Vancouver, Washington. I have been practicing physical therapy since 1999. I have been heavily involved in CrossFit since 2007. In 2008 I opened the first CrossFit affiliate in Vancouver, The Workout CrossFit.

Enough about that. I wanted to share my experience regarding retooling an athlete. I have done this with many athletes. My plan is share my personal retooling. I have competed in every CrossFit Open workout since it’s inception. I have a wonderful wife and 5 beautiful daughters along with 2 businesses and a dog. I’m really busy and my workout time comes at a cost. I’m a take it when I can get it kind of guy. Between all my responsibility, if I can do a 15 minute workout 1-2 times per day, I’m doing pretty good. On some days I get 3 five to 10 minute workouts, on others I may get 5 one minute efforts spread throughout the day. I’m getting this all out, so you know where I am coming from. I feel like I’ve become somewhat of a compulsive exerciser. I go and do, regardless of how I feel. I try to get at least one “workout” in every day except Sunday. I promised God a long time ago that Sunday was set aside just for him and my family, so there is no compromise there. On the other days, however, I live with this little fear of not being able to get in a workout “tomorrow”, so I do at least a little something every day.

Back to the retooling. What is it? Simply put, it’s taking an athlete and going back to square one to make sure all of their parts are doing what they are supposed to be doing. How’s the spinal mobility and alignment, scapular position and core stability? This is just a start. Think it’s good? If your having pain, then it’s probably not as good as your think. I will do my best to chronical my own retooling and share it with others here.

Stay tuned…….
